Paul A. Perry is owner and operator of Certified Inspections, a residential and commercial property inspection business. Perry moved to Crossville in 2004 where he continued his 11-year-old home inspection career by opening Certified Inspections. Perry has now been a full-time home inspector for 24 years, performing over 8,000 total inspections.
When asked what makes Certified Inspections different from others offering similar services, he had a ready response: “Oh that one is easy. It’s my business model. My business is based on a client service model where my obligation and loyalty are to my clients. It’s pretty amazing; but after 7,000 inspections, I have a 98.8 percent customer satisfaction rating.”
When asked how his approach to the inspection process was different, he continued: “My approach is based on getting the information about the property to my client in a straight-forward and easy-to-understand manner. The inspection process is twofold–the actual inspection of the property and the report. What the inspector finds during the actual inspection will be based on their experience, applicable education and personal diligence. The report is vital in this process. Unlike others in the industry, I have a report that is free from “generic” or “boiler plate” information. There is nothing in my report that “appears serviceable”; because in my opinion, this kind of information doesn’t help my client. If it doesn’t help my client, I’m not going to put it in my report. I designed and developed my own report format after being a full-time inspector for 12 years. My report is 14 pages long, plus pictures of key issues. They are easy to read and straight forward; my customers love them.”
You mentioned “applicable education.” What were you referring to there? “This is another of the key differences between home inspectors. Many individuals getting into the industry have either retired from an unrelated profession or simply chosen this as a new venture, attended a state mandated two-week education course, paid for a state license and started inspecting. My background is all about construction and inspections. I had about 15 years of construction and residential maintenance experience, seven years of that being as a licensed builder/contractor in central Georgia where building codes were in place and being enforced. I entered the Home Inspection industry full time in 1993 and became certified by ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) in 1995. Since that time I have received well over 600 hours of continuing education directly relating to the construction or inspection industries. I have also gone through the educational and testing process to obtain my ICC certification as a ‘Residential Building Inspector’ with the 2009 International Residential Code. To adequately and professionally inspect a home with all of its various components and systems is very demanding. The more fully qualified and experienced the inspector is, the more thorough and detailed the results should be.”
